Why do You say India does not have LLMs or Foundation Models? It should learn the way DeepSeek was created by China.
✅ Yes, India has LLMs (BharatGPT, OpenHathi, IndicGPT, MahaGPT).
✅ Yes, India is building foundation models (Krutrim, Hanooman AI).
I agree India does NOT yet have GPT-4 scale models in terms of size, computing, and multimodal capabilities. Work in progress for same and soon you all will hear good news from India as well.
I want to share with you the story of supercomputer development by CDAC (proud to be an alumnus of here) in India that happened in the past, which will assure you.
We know hashtag#DeepSeek’s success despite US chip export controls targeting Chinese AI firms demonstrates how sanctions may be backfiring, as they push companies like DeepSeek to innovate through efficiency, resource-pooling, and collaboration rather than weakening China’s AI capabilities.
In the late 1980s, when hashtag#India requested to purchase a CRAY X-MP hashtag#supercomputer (then the world’s most advanced), the US government denied the request under export control laws, fearing it could be used for nuclear weapons development.
With a tiny budget compared to Western tech giants, Dr. Bhatkar and his team worked day and night to create India’s first supercomputer—hashtag#PARAM (Parallel Machine) in just three years.
In 1991, PARAM 8000 was unveiled, and it shocked the world. It was as powerful as the Cray supercomputer that the US had refused to sell. Even more impressive, it was faster, cost-effective, and entirely built in India.
So rest assured, Indian Techies are working hard to come up with a new AI revolution as well. Following is the current list already here which all will be groomed for a global scale and more will be added.
